Wyoming’s shortage of primary care registered nurses is due largely to the fact that Wyoming is a highly rural state. It also has the largest number of elderly residents per capita in the United States. Registered nurse salaries in Wyoming, on average, are around  $59,000 in the larger cities of Cheyenne, Casper, and Laramie.

The top hospital employer in the state is Cheyenne Regional Medical Center with 1,800 employees. Wyoming Regional Medical Center in Casper has 1,400 employees. Five other hospitals employ between 400 and 600. There are several smaller hospitals throughout the state where the range is 150-175 employees.
